Elizabeth De Jesus

Sometimes you need to take the elevator down in order for you career to go up! That’s exactly what happened to our inaugural Employee Spotlight recipient, Elizabeth DeJesus.

Prior to starting her career at TheraCare, Liz was working as a bi-lingual Case Worker for a Foster Care firm located on the 11th floor of the 116 West 32nd Street building. One day, as she was leaving the building, the elevator stopped at TheraCare’s 8th floor and Elizabeth’s college friend gets into the elevator! During this short ride Elizabeth discovered that TheraCare was in need of a Spanish-speaking Service Coordinator. She forwarded her resume and within a couple of weeks, TheraCare hired Elizabeth, starting her long and illustrious TC career.

Elizabeth attributes much of her early career success to Emily Prostic Tlusty, who not only was her supervisor but her mentor as well. Emily took Elizabeth under her wing. Looking back at it, as a mentor to others herself, Liz saw that Emily was grooming her for a bigger role within the company.

Liz details the day that Emily approached her to use her work as a training sample. According to Emily, the charts that Liz was producing were “perfect” and could be used to train new and existing Service Coordinators.

Within the next couple of years, Liz was promoted to a Senior Service Coordinator and when Emily left the company she suggest that Liz apply for her role of Borough Coordinator for Manhattan. Despite a rigorous interview process, Elizabeth had the new role.

Over the next couple of years, Liz moved between Operations Manager and NYC Service Coordination Manager positions covering Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens and even Long Island. She’s overseen teams that provided Early Intervention, Pre-school Special Education, SCIS and Service Coordination.

In her current role as Operations Director, she leads a dedicated group that provides services in the EI, CPSE and SCIS areas for the borough of Brooklyn. Elizabeth credits her passion for running an effective business, while not losing focus on helping children to her career growth at TheraCare. She enjoys mentoring others as a way to pass it forward, just like Emily did 17 years ago.

The Early Intervention Program (EIP) is a public program funded by New York State and county governments for children under the age of three who are either suspected of having or at risk for developmental delays or disabilities. Potentially eligible children must be referred to the county program to receive EIP services: New York City - 311 Westchester County - 914-813-5094 All EIP services are provided at no cost to parents. Health Insurance may be used for approved services. A child’s eligibility for the program can be determined only by state-approved evaluators under contract and all services must be authorized by the county. If a child is found eligible for the EIP, all needed early intervention services are identified in collaboration with the parent and must be authorized by the municipality. The municipality will arrange for service providers, considering the individual needs of the child and family, to deliver services authorized by the municipality. When early intervention services are delivered in child care settings or community locations that require a fee, the parent is responsible for paying any associated costs with such access to child care or community locations. TheraCare is approved by New York State and has a contract with New York City, Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk Counties to provide early intervention services.
